Crystal Skull Buying Checklist

Decide on quality and grade. Before you go out buying, set a budget and think about how you are going to use the skull. It is all too easy to be seduced into buying something inappropriate and expensive. It is pointless buying a huge skull if you want to carry it around with you. Skulls, like crystals generally, don't have to be big and showy to be effective. Check out the qualities of the crystal in the Crystal Directory (pages 167–180) or in my Crystal Bibles, Encyclopedia of Crystals, or 101 Power Crystals for more depth of information.

Compare and contrast. Unless a particular skull has grabbed you and won't let go, there'll always be a choice. Look up comparable skulls on the Internet to check prices and quality. A true one-off, high-quality piece is worthy of a high price, while poor quality is not. Use a magnifying glass or the zoom feature to check for glued portions and serious damage.

Don't believe the sales pitch. Not every skull is one of a kind, or haunted, or any such nonsense. If you are seeking a rather special, high-quality skull, go to a reputable crystal shop or one of the specialist Internet sites. Research Internet sellers and read the reviews and you'll soon know whom to trust. Also see the Resources section at the end of this book. If the skull is in a crystal shop, the staff will be aware enough to tell you what you need to know. After all, they have had daily contact with the skull.

Check authenticity. Ensure that it is the genuine material, or that you have been told up front if the skull is smelted Quartz, resin, or man-made glass.

Trust your intuition. If a skull has caught your eye, it's probably the one for you.
